OUR STORY

In 2011, Alison Hurst and a small group of volunteers in Venice Beach began handing out hot meals, socks, and clothing to young people experiencing homelessness. They showed up consistently with care and compassion, creating the foundation for Safe Place for Youth.

SPY was formed to fill gaps in services for youth at risk of homelessness, including foster youth, LGBTQIA+ youth, and BIPOC youth.

With support from volunteers and partners, SPY expanded its programs. In 2015, we moved into a building in Venice, allowing us to provide more consistent services and partnerships.

In 2017, SPY became the lead agency for West LA’s Youth Coordinated Entry System, coordinating housing resources for homeless youth.

From a volunteer effort, SPY grew to nearly 80 staff who strengthened our programs and impact. Youth homelessness in LA continues to rise, and we remain committed to policy work and daily support for youth.

Today, our mission focuses on preventing homelessness, expanding services, uplifting youth voices, supporting staff, and ensuring sustainability.

We remember our beginnings — people responding with care to youth in need. That spirit guides us today as we work to give every young person safety and a future they choose.
